Understanding Past Life Regression Therapy

By Jose Young

The question as to whether we are much more than just our bodies is one that has probably existed since the beginning of time. In many religious teachings, the soul is said to be the most important aspect of existence. Past life regression therapy is a branch of hypnotherapy that is based on the belief that life is a cycle through which the soul travels. This means that a single soul has been through multiple lifetimes in the past.

Therapist who practice in this area say that accessing the memories of our past lives can go a long way into dealing with modern day challenges. Such memories are believed to help us in receiving healing for a number of mental and physical illnesses. They are also useful in resolving social challenges such as those that relate to interpersonal relationships. Undergoing regular therapeutic sessions helps attain better personal growth.

The technique is similar to hypnotherapy in that the client enters a state of trance. Under the influence of suggestions made by the therapist, they experience their past lives by seeing, feeling, sensing the events. It is different from past life reading which refers to the passive process of undergoing the same without physically experiencing the events. Past life reading does not have any therapeutic effects.

Different persons have similar or differing accounts of their experiences. The memories may come vividly to the client (as if they are watching a movie), or may just be experienced as vague flashes. Memories may also be experienced by other senses such as smell (burning rubber, sweet smelling flowers, for example), auditory (such as a gunshot, music and a crying baby) or gustatory (sweet, salty or bitter taste). Put simply, persons get a full sensory experience.

The events that have happened in previous lifetimes have the potential to affect the lives we are leading today. Since this tends to happen at the subconscious level, we are unlikely to be aware or the influences. Depending on the events in question, the influences may be negative or positive. Those that have been found to play a major role include emotional debts, sudden deaths, broken vows, achievements and so on.

The areas of our lives that are most likely to be affected include interpersonal relationships, achievements and personal health (both mental and physical). The positive memories are important because they help persons to bring out the best of themselves. This may include, for example, discovering and growing talents and gaining wisdom. Their most important influence is said to be the ability to help people understand their life purpose better. Negative patterns, in contrast, lead to unwanted behaviors.

The therapist will advise that you choose one objective. This is because there are many memories that may come flooding if one keeps the session open. Putting all these memories in context presents a major challenge. The specific objective may be related to questions related to issues such as interpersonal relationships, achievements, illnesses, talents and so on.

Regression therapies are design to help the soul heal from various afflictions by dealing with unresolved problems in previous life times. Negative memories in the past are dropped or neutralized while positive ones are reinforced. The therapy is increasingly gaining acceptance among persons of different religions.
