As such, it is important to understand the truth behind CBD and other wellness trends.

As with all medications for pets, separating fact from fiction is essential in guaranteeing the safety of treatment. As a method of assisting pet owners better understand the facts about CBD oil and other products, the American Kennel Association's top veterinarian has provided an explanation as to the properties, drawbacks and benefits of the product as it relates to dogs.

While being a compound derived from the cannabis or hemp plant, there are no high levels of THC in CBD oil or other products. Although, there can be trace amounts in some products now being sold on the open market. As CBD is derived from the hemp aspect of the plant, users do not experience the same highs as those whom imbibe smoke or edibles containing marijuana.

There have been no official studies with regards to CBD in relation to dogs or other animals. However, scientists have now discovered that the benefits of CBD comes from an interaction with endo-cannabinoids receptors located in the central nervous system of humans. As a result, the product, when used appropriately, has the capability to balance and keep the body in a healthy state.

While there has been no official scientific evidence established as to how the product effects animals, pet owners claim the product has shown to ease pain, control seizures and calm anxiety in dogs, cats and other pets. As such, it appears the effects are basically the same in most pets as humans.

The product also has anti-inflammatory properties, anti-nausea effects, anti-anxiety impact, cardiac benefits and has been proven to kill cancer cells according to both the Harvard and New England Journals of Medicine. At the same time, there has been no conclusive scientific confirmation with regards to this being the case. Still, those whom are, or have been using the product often confirm these aspects to be true.

Currently, the AKC Canine Health Foundation is sponsoring a study at the Colorado State University's College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences division which is aimed at evaluating the use of the product in epileptic dogs whom have been resistant to treatment. The organization hopes the study will be the first to prove the use of CBD beneficial in treating various conditions. At the same time, it is important to provide the proper dosage according to the distributor or package of the product.

Just as there have been no proof of benefits, there have been even fewer studies with regards to side effects or drug interactions. Although, based on current findings of how CBD oil effects humans, while there is potential for side effects, most are common with regards to uses for CBD. For example, there is a calming effect which has the potential to lower blood pressure and cause drowsiness. As such, if an individual takes more than the recommended dosage, it could lead to long periods of drowsiness or sleep.
